The everyday limo in Mumbai is the luxury sedan, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class or BMW 7 Series, with a senior chauffeur: the car the Taj or the Oberoi sends for a first-class arrival, the car a studio sends for its lead, the car a family books for an anniversary along Marine Drive. It is joined by the Mercedes-Benz GLS for a party with luggage, the V-Class for six who want to travel together, and the executive sedan for the working end of the same standard. All are priced from the published cards: the S-Class is $2,600 for an airport transfer with an hour of waiting, $300 an hour with a four-hour minimum, $2,200 for the eight-hour day and $2,700 for the charter day; the international card bills $350, $300 an hour, $2,200 and $2,700.

The bookings are the T2 or Navi Mumbai arrival to Colaba, Nariman Point, Worli or Juhu; the evening by the hour for a dinner in Bandra or Lower Parel; the day for a principal's meetings between BKC and the south; the talent car for a shoot; and the Expressway run to Pune or Lonavala in the rear cabin. A premiere car, a show car or a wedding car is a piece of choreography, and the desk plans it with the family, the publicist or the planner in the weeks before.

A Mumbai limousine booking is decided by two questions before anything else: which airport, and which toll road. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Navi Mumbai International sit on opposite sides of the harbour, so the desk checks the code against the flight number rather than assuming. Then the Sea Link, the Coastal Road and the Eastern Freeway each save time on some legs and none on others, and the tolls are itemised at cost afterwards, so the chauffeur's choice is a matter of money as well as minutes.

• The site check The approach road, the turning space and the porte-cochere height at a Juhu hotel or a Bandra venue, checked before the day, because a stretch does not fit every Mumbai lane and a vintage car does not like a steep ramp.
• The day The chauffeur arrives early in a dark suit, the car is staged where the camera wants it, the timing is held, the coordinator is on the phone throughout and a standby vehicle is held for the entrance that cannot be late.
• The departure The car waits as long as the function runs, and the guest fleet follows the run sheet the planner agreed.
