Varanasi's single terminal has one arrivals exit, and the chauffeur waits there with a name board; the pick-up bay is across the forecourt. The Jaunpur road runs south-east past Sarnath to the city: Taj Ganges and Taj Nadesar Palace in the Cantonment are about 22 km and 40 to 50 minutes, and the road-head for the ghats at Godowlia about 25 km and up to an hour. BrijRama Palace and Guleria Kothi sit on the river itself, so the chauffeur drops at the nearest ghat road and the hotel's boat or porters take over.

Varanasi's working economy is silk, tourism, education and now the pilgrim infrastructure around the Kashi Vishwanath corridor: the Banarasi sari weavers and merchants in Madanpura and Lallapura, the university and its hospital at Lanka, the state and district offices in the Cantonment, and the hotel and boat trade along the river. A business day-hire is typically a Cantonment hotel to a weaving unit and a Sigra meeting; a pilgrim or leisure day starts at the river before sunrise for the boat ride, returns for breakfast, and comes back to Dashashwamedh for the evening aarti with the chauffeur holding the car at Godowlia. Sarnath is the essential half-day, only about 10 km and on the airport road, so it is often done on arrival or departure. Prayagraj and the Sangam are a long day west, Ayodhya a longer one north-west, and Bodh Gaya an overnight into Bihar. Dev Deepawali in November, when every ghat is lit with lamps, is the single biggest night of the year and boats and cars are booked weeks ahead; the Ramnagar Ramlila runs for a month each autumn across the river. Rail passengers are met at Varanasi Junction (BSB) in the Cantonment, at Banaras station (BSBS) at Manduadih, and at Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (DDU) across the river for the main-line trains that do not enter the city.
