This is the short circuit that makes best use of a weekend extended at both ends. Bengaluru to Mysore is three hours on an expressway, Mysore to the Coorg coffee country is three more, and between them sit Srirangapatna, Tipu Sultan's island fortress, and the Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu — some of the most intricately carved stone anywhere in India.

The shape
Three landscapes inside 700 kilometres
Karnataka packs an unusual amount into a short radius. Mysore, three hours from Bengaluru on the expressway, is a palace city with a working royal household and the best-preserved courtly architecture in the south. Coorg, three hours further west and 1,100 metres up, is coffee country — plantations under rain trees, cardamom and pepper growing in the shade, and a hill culture that is distinct from the rest of the state. Belur and Halebidu, north of Mysore, hold twelfth-century Hoysala temples carved in soapstone at a level of detail that has to be seen rather than described.
The expressway is what makes the circuit work in five days. Bengaluru to Mysore used to be a four-and-a-half hour crawl; it is now about three hours of genuine motorway, which frees an afternoon at the far end. The circuit loops rather than running one-way, because Bengaluru is the only airport with real connections. That means about 700 kilometres in total, with the longest single leg under three and a half hours.

What each place holds
Four quite different things within a short drive of one another.
Srirangapatna — the island fort
About 15 km before Mysore: Tipu Sultan's island capital, with the Daria Daulat summer palace, his mausoleum at Gumbaz and the ramparts where he died in 1799. An hour and a half, and almost always quiet.
Mysore — the palace city
The Amba Vilas palace, lit by about a hundred thousand bulbs on Sunday evenings, the Devaraja market, Chamundi Hill above the town and the St Philomena's church. During Dasara in September or October the whole city is a procession.
Coorg — the coffee hills
Madikeri as the base, with plantation stays the real attraction. Abbey and Iruppu falls, the Tibetan settlement at Bylakuppe with its golden temple, and the Talakaveri source of the Kaveri river.
Belur and Halebidu — the Hoysala carving
About 35 km apart north of Hassan: soapstone temples from the twelfth century covered in friezes of elephants, dancers and epic scenes, carved at jeweller's scale.
The driving
Four legs on good roads
About 700 kilometres, and the expressway does most of the heavy lifting.
- Bengaluru to Mysore — about 145 km, 3 hours The expressway, with Srirangapatna just before the city. Leaving Bengaluru before eight makes a material difference.
- Mysore to Madikeri — about 120 km, 3 hours West through Hunsur into the hills, climbing gently through coffee country.
- Madikeri to Hassan — about 120 km, 3 hours North out of the hills onto the plateau, for Belur and Halebidu.
- Hassan to Bengaluru — about 185 km, 3.5 hours East on the highway through Channarayapatna, with Shravanabelagola's hilltop Jain statue about 50 km along if you want it.
Coffee
What a plantation stay actually involves
Coorg's plantations are its accommodation as much as its agriculture. A large number of working estates take guests in converted planter's bungalows, and the experience is genuinely different from a hotel: you are on a farm, the walk before breakfast is through the crop, and somebody will explain the difference between arabica and robusta whether or not you asked.
The harvest runs roughly from November to February, which is the most interesting time to be there and also the busiest. The monsoon from June to September is the other season worth considering — the hills are spectacular, rates fall sharply, and the coffee flowers after the first rains, which is a smell nobody forgets. Leeches are a genuine feature of monsoon walks and the estates supply socks.
Because estate stays vary enormously and the good ones are small, this is a circuit where the all-inclusive quote earns its keep. Send the dates through the contact page and the desk will name the estates it uses rather than describing a category.

If your dates fall in Dasara, say so — Mysore is spectacular then and completely full, and it needs booking months rather than weeks ahead. What the transport package includes
- A private, air-conditioned vehicle of the class you book, held for the whole circuit — the same car from the first pickup to the last drop, never shared and never re-assigned.

- Airport transfers include 60 minutes of waiting after landing and meet-and-greet at the arrivals exit.
- The charter day (10 hours, 300 km) includes fuel and the chauffeur's meals and accommodation on outstation nights.
- Night driving between 10 pm and 6 am carries the night allowance per night; a second chauffeur is added on days over 12 hours.

The 5-day Karnataka circuit: frequently asked
How long is Bengaluru to Mysore now?
About three hours on the expressway, down from four and a half before it opened. Leaving Bengaluru before eight avoids the city's outbound traffic and makes a real difference.
Is a coffee plantation stay worth it?
It is the main reason to go to Coorg. You stay on a working estate rather than in a hotel, and the walk through the crop before breakfast is the point. The good ones are small, so book early.
When is the coffee harvest?
Roughly November to February, which is the most interesting and busiest time. The June to September monsoon is the other good window — dramatic hills, low rates, and the coffee flowering after the first rains.
What is special about Belur and Halebidu?
Twelfth-century Hoysala temples carved in soapstone at a level of detail closer to jewellery than architecture — friezes of elephants, dancers and epic scenes running right around the buildings.
Should we plan around Dasara?
If you want it, book months ahead — Mysore during Dasara in September or October is extraordinary and entirely full. If you do not, avoid those dates; the city is at capacity.
Can we add Ooty?
Yes — that is the six-day version, which carries on from Coorg or Mysore into the Nilgiris.
