Between them they hold a thousand years of temple architecture, one of the four great Hindu pilgrimage sites, and a thirteenth-century sun temple carved as a chariot that is among the most extraordinary buildings in India.

The triangle

Three places, almost no driving

Most Indian circuits are defined by their distances. This one is defined by the lack of them: Bhubaneswar to Konark is about 65 kilometres, Konark to Puri about 35, and Puri back to Bhubaneswar about 60. The entire circuit is roughly 250 kilometres of driving over four days, which makes it one of the least demanding routes we publish and a good choice for travellers who dislike long transfers.

What it lacks in driving it makes up in density. Bhubaneswar has something over 500 surviving temples, of which perhaps a dozen matter architecturally, and the Lingaraj is one of the great buildings of eastern India. Konark is a UNESCO site. Puri's Jagannath temple is one of the Char Dham, the four holiest Hindu sites in the country.

The circuit also has a coast. Puri is a beach town as well as a pilgrimage one, and the sea makes it a natural place to end rather than a place to pass through. The city guides cover the Bhubaneswar end and the local rates.

What each one holds

A temple city, a sun temple and a pilgrimage town on the sea.

Bhubaneswar

The Lingaraj temple, Mukteshwar with its carved torana, Rajarani and Parasurameswara — a thousand years of Kalinga architecture in one city. Plus the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Jain caves and the Dhauli peace pagoda where Ashoka renounced war.

Konark

The thirteenth-century Sun Temple, built as a colossal chariot with twenty-four carved stone wheels and seven horses. The main tower has collapsed; what remains is still overwhelming. A UNESCO World Heritage site.

Puri

The Jagannath temple, one of the four Char Dham and closed to non-Hindus, with the great Rath Yatra chariot festival in June or July. Plus a long beach and, nearby, the artists' village of Raghurajpur.

Access

The one restriction worth knowing in advance

The Jagannath temple at Puri is closed to non-Hindus, and this is enforced rather than nominal. Foreign visitors, and Indians of other faiths, are not admitted past the gates. The usual arrangement is to view the temple from the roof of the Raghunandan Library opposite, which gives a clear look at the complex, and a small donation is expected.

That restriction does not apply elsewhere on the circuit. Lingaraj in Bhubaneswar has a similar rule but offers a viewing platform outside the wall; Konark is an archaeological site with no restriction at all; and the caves, the peace pagoda and the smaller Bhubaneswar temples are open to everyone.

The practical consequence is that a non-Hindu traveller should not plan Puri around the temple interior. There is still a great deal to do — the beach, Raghurajpur, the Chilika day if you extend to five days — but the itinerary weights it accordingly, and the desk says so at booking rather than letting it be discovered at the gate.

Crafts

Raghurajpur and Pipli, and why they are worth an hour each

Raghurajpur, about 14 kilometres from Puri, is a heritage crafts village where essentially every household paints pattachitra — cloth scrolls in natural pigment, a tradition several centuries old and still practised rather than performed. It is also the birthplace of the Odissi dancer Kelucharan Mohapatra. Visiting is straightforward, buying is expected but not pressured, and it is far more interesting than a shop.

Pipli, on the Bhubaneswar-Puri road, does applique work — the bright stitched canopies and umbrellas used in the Rath Yatra and now sold as lampshades and wall hangings. It is a single street of workshops and takes twenty minutes, which is exactly why it suits a leg the car is already driving.

Both are on the route rather than off it, which is the argument for a car on this circuit even though the distances are short. Neither is reachable sensibly by public transport, and both are the kind of stop a taxi hired by the hour will hurry you through.

Can non-Hindus enter the Jagannath temple?

No — the restriction is enforced. The usual arrangement is to view the complex from the roof of the Raghunandan Library opposite, where a small donation is expected. Konark and the caves have no restriction.

How much driving is there?
