Tamil Nadu holds the oldest continuously worshipped temples in India, and they are not in one place — they run down the coast and inland through the Kaveri delta across about 700 kilometres. Six days takes the essential line of them: the shore temples at Mamallapuram, the French quarter at Puducherry, the Chola bronzes and the great temple at Thanjavur, and Madurai, where the Meenakshi temple is still the centre of a working city.

The line

Why this circuit runs one-way rather than looping

The temples of Tamil Nadu sit on a line running south-west from Chennai, and any attempt to loop back turns a pleasant week into a driving one. This circuit therefore runs one-way: in to Chennai, out of Madurai, with about 700 kilometres of steady forward motion in between and nothing driven twice. Madurai has good domestic connections, and the desk checks them before fixing the direction.

What that buys is short days. The longest leg is about 190 kilometres, roughly three and a half hours, which on this circuit is deliberate — temple days are walking days, often barefoot on hot stone, and arriving somewhere at seven in the evening having driven since morning wastes the place. Every day here has a temple morning or afternoon and a drive, not both at length.

The East Coast Road out of Chennai is the other reason to run it this way round. It is a genuinely good coastal drive with a toll section, and doing it on the first morning while everything is still novel is better than doing it last. The Chennai chauffeur page covers the city end.

The four places

What separates them

They are all temple towns and they are not interchangeable.

Mamallapuram — the rock cut

Seventh and eighth-century Pallava work carved out of the granite itself: the Shore Temple, the Five Rathas, and Arjuna's Penance, a relief the size of a building. It is a beach town as well, which makes it an easy first night.

Puducherry — the French quarter

Not a temple town at all, which is why it belongs here. Grid-planned streets, ochre colonial houses, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and a promenade. It resets the palate between the coast and the delta.

Thanjavur — the imperial Chola

The Brihadisvara temple is a UNESCO site and the high point of Chola architecture, with a 66-metre vimana raised around 1010. The palace and the bronze gallery in the town hold the best Chola bronzes anywhere.

Madurai — the living temple

Meenakshi Amman is not a monument: it is the functioning heart of a city of a million people, with gopurams covered in thousands of painted figures and a night ceremony that has run for centuries.

The driving

Four legs, none of them long

About 700 kilometres from Chennai to Madurai, spread so no day is dominated by the road.

Chennai to Mamallapuram — about 60 km, 1.5 hours The East Coast Road, with a tolled section. An easy first morning.
Mamallapuram to Puducherry — about 100 km, 2.5 hours Further down the coast past Kalpakkam and Marakkanam.
Puducherry to Thanjavur — about 170 km, 3.5 hours Inland into the Kaveri delta, with Chidambaram's Nataraja temple almost exactly halfway and worth the stop.
Thanjavur to Madurai — about 190 km, 3.5 hours South-west through Tiruchirappalli, where the Rockfort temple sits on an outcrop above the town.

Temple etiquette

The practical things nobody tells you in advance

Shoes come off outside every temple, and in the larger ones that means a walk of several hundred metres barefoot on stone that by eleven in the morning is genuinely hot. Socks are permitted in most and make the difference. This is the main argument for early starts on this circuit, and it is why the itinerary puts temple visits before ten or after four.

Several major temples restrict the inner sanctum to Hindus, including parts of Meenakshi Amman and the Nataraja temple at Chidambaram. The outer prakarams, the gopurams and the halls are open to everyone and are the bulk of what there is to see, but it is better to know than to be turned back. Photography is usually barred inside sanctums and sometimes charged for elsewhere.

Dress is modest: covered shoulders and knees for everyone, and at a few temples men are asked to remove shirts before entering the sanctum. A licensed guide is worth taking at Thanjavur and Madurai in particular, where the iconography is dense and almost incomprehensible without one; the desk arranges them city by city and bills at cost.

Questions

The 6-day South India circuit: frequently asked

Why does this circuit not return to Chennai?

Because the temples run in a line south-west, and looping back would add about 450 km of repeated road. Flying out of Madurai keeps every kilometre forward and every day short.

Can non-Hindus enter the temples?

The outer courtyards, gopurams and halls yes, everywhere on this circuit. Some inner sanctums — including parts of Meenakshi Amman and Chidambaram — are restricted to Hindus. That is the bulk of what you see either way.

Why are the temple visits so early?

Shoes come off at the entrance, and by mid-morning the stone is too hot to walk on comfortably. Socks help; early starts help more, which is how the itinerary is built.

Do we need a guide?

At Thanjavur and Madurai particularly, yes — the iconography is dense and largely unreadable without one. We arrange licensed guides city by city and bill at cost rather than bundling them.

When is the best season?

November to February, when it is merely warm rather than hot. The north-east monsoon brings rain to this coast in October and November, and April to June is very hot for a circuit spent walking on stone.

Can we add Rameswaram or Kanyakumari?

Both sit beyond Madurai and need extra days — that is the eight-day version, which carries on to the tip of the peninsula.
