Four-day Amritsar tour package: the Golden Temple, Wagah and the border country
Amritsar is a one-city trip that needs four days rather than two, because the two things it is famous for happen at opposite ends of the day and the country around it is worth the rest. The Golden Temple is best at dawn and again after dark; the Wagah border ceremony is at sunset, 28 kilometres away, and you must be there early. Between them sit Jallianwala Bagh, the Partition Museum and some of the best food in India.

The temple
Why the Golden Temple needs more than one visit
Almost everyone visits the Harmandir Sahib once, in the middle of the day, and comes away impressed rather than moved. The building is the same at every hour; the experience is not. At about four in the morning the Guru Granth Sahib is carried into the temple in procession, the marble is empty and cold underfoot and the sound is almost nothing. After dark the gold is lit and doubled in the water, and the crowds are large but the atmosphere is completely different again.
The other thing worth doing properly is the langar. The community kitchen feeds something on the order of a hundred thousand people a day, free, to anyone who sits down, and the scale of the operation in the kitchens behind is genuinely staggering. Visitors are welcome to eat and equally welcome to help wash up, which a surprising number of travellers end up doing for an hour.
A four-day trip has room for both ends of the day without making either a rush. The chauffeur drops close to the entrance — the streets immediately around the complex are pedestrianised — and the desk builds the dawn visit into the schedule rather than leaving it as something you might manage.

Jallianwala Bagh
The walled garden beside the temple where the 1919 massacre took place, with the bullet marks preserved and the well into which people jumped. It takes half an hour and it is not a comfortable one.
The Partition Museum
In the old town hall: the only museum in the world dedicated to the 1947 partition, built largely from oral histories. It is the single best piece of context for everything else on this trip and deserves two hours.
Wagah border ceremony
The daily flag-lowering at the Pakistan border, 28 km west: high-kicking guards, competitive patriotism on both sides and a stadium crowd. It starts before sunset and you need to be there well ahead of that.
The country
The Punjab beyond the city
Most Amritsar itineraries stop at the city limits, which misses the point of Punjab. Within an hour or so there is genuinely rural country: canal-side villages, wheat and mustard depending on the season, gurdwaras in every settlement and dhabas on the trunk roads that are better than most city restaurants.
Two specific places justify the drive. Pul Kanjari, a small Sikh-era complex about 35 kilometres out near the border, is almost always empty. And the village experience circuit south of the city — several farms take visitors for a half day of tractor rides, cooking and a meal — is touristy in construction but the food and the hospitality are real.
The other thing Punjab does better than anywhere is roadside eating. The dhabas on the Amritsar-Jalandhar road are the originals of a style that has been copied across India, and the chauffeur will know which ones are worth stopping at. On a four-day trip, at least one lunch should be at one.

What the transport package includes
- A private, air-conditioned vehicle of the class you book, held for the whole circuit — the same car from the first pickup to the last drop, never shared and never re-assigned.

The 4-day Punjab circuit: frequently asked
Why visit the Golden Temple more than once?
Because it is a different place at different hours. The 04:00 procession is quiet and extraordinary; after dark the gold is lit and reflected. The middle of the day is the least rewarding time and the one most visitors choose.
What time should we leave for the Wagah ceremony?
By about three in the afternoon. It is only 28 km but the road fills, seating is first-come, and arriving late means standing at the back of a stadium crowd.
Can we eat at the langar?
Yes — anyone may sit and eat, free, and many visitors also spend an hour helping in the kitchens. It is one of the more memorable hours on the whole circuit.
Is the Partition Museum worth the time?
It is the best context available for everything else in Amritsar, built largely from oral histories of 1947. Give it two hours rather than one.
Is four days too many for one city?
It is the right number if you want dawn and evening at the temple, Wagah, the museums and a day in the countryside. Two days covers the headlines and misses most of what makes the place.
When is the best time to visit?
October to March. April to June is very hot on the plains, and the monsoon is humid. The Wagah ceremony runs year-round, shifting with sunset.
