Five-day Punjab tour package: Amritsar and the road up to Dharamshala
Amritsar sits about 200 kilometres from Dharamshala, which is four and a half hours on a good road and by far the shortest approach to the Kangra valley from anywhere. The five-day circuit uses that: three days in and around Amritsar, then up into the hills for the Tibetan town, the Dhauladhar range and air that is twenty degrees cooler than the plains. It is the most efficient way to combine a flat pilgrimage city with a mountain one.

The combination
Why Amritsar and Dharamshala belong on one trip
These two places are usually sold as parts of different holidays, which is a geographical accident rather than a sensible one. Amritsar is the natural air gateway to the whole north-west, and Dharamshala is 200 kilometres away — closer than Shimla, far closer than Manali, and on a road that runs steadily uphill through Pathankot without any of the hairpin work the Shimla and Manali approaches demand.
The contrast is the point. Amritsar is flat, hot, loud and Sikh; Dharamshala is steep, cool, quiet and Tibetan. Going from the langar at the Golden Temple to a monastery courtyard in McLeod Ganj in the space of a morning's drive is one of the sharper transitions available in India, and it makes both places register more strongly than either would alone.
Practically, it also solves the Dharamshala access problem. Most Dharamshala itineraries approach from Delhi, which is about 480 kilometres and a very long day. From Amritsar it is a comfortable half day, which leaves an afternoon at the far end rather than an arrival after dark.

Two nights at Dharamshala is the right allocation on this circuit.
McLeod Ganj
The Tsuglagkhang complex opposite the Dalai Lama's residence, the Tibet Museum, Namgyal monastery and the Kora circuit. Teaching schedules are published in advance and fill the town; the desk checks them against your dates.
Norbulingka and Palampur
The Norbulingka Institute below the town keeps Tibetan crafts alive in a Japanese-designed garden, and the Palampur tea gardens and Baijnath temple are within an hour east.
The Dhauladhar
The range rises from about 1,800 metres at the town to over 4,500 at the ridge. Triund is the classic walk — about nine kilometres up from Galu temple, four to five hours — with the chauffeur dropping and collecting.
The driving
Three legs, one of them uphill
About 650 kilometres in total if the circuit finishes at Chandigarh or back at Amritsar.
- Amritsar local — about 20 to 30 km a day The temple, the museums and the bazaars are all in the old city, with Wagah 28 km west.
- Amritsar to Dharamshala — about 200 km, 4.5 hours East through Pathankot and into the Kangra valley. Steady climbing rather than hairpins, and a genuinely pleasant drive.
- Dharamshala onward — about 250 km to Chandigarh, 5 to 6 hours; about 200 km back to Amritsar, 4.5 hours Either finish; the desk picks the one that matches your outbound flight.
The seasons
Two places with different best months
This circuit has a scheduling wrinkle worth knowing: the plains and the hills do not peak together. Amritsar is comfortable from October to March and punishing from April to June, when 44 degrees is normal. Dharamshala is pleasant from March to June and again in September and October, cold and sometimes snowbound in January and February, and heavily rained on in July and August.
The overlap that works best is therefore October and November, and again March and early April. In those windows both halves of the trip are at or near their best. If your dates fall outside them, the desk will tell you which half will suffer — a December trip means a fine Amritsar and a very cold Dharamshala; a May trip means a lovely Dharamshala and an Amritsar day that has to be run at dawn and dusk.
The Dhauladhar range holds snow into April and looks its most dramatic then, which is a genuine argument for the spring window over the autumn one if the mountains are what you came for. The seven-day Himachal circuit covers the same valley as part of a longer mountain route.

What the transport package includes
- A private, air-conditioned vehicle of the class you book, held for the whole circuit — the same car from the first pickup to the last drop, never shared and never re-assigned.
- One professional chauffeur for the whole circuit, holding a commercial licence and a state transport badge, police-verified and background-checked, in uniform and speaking English and Hindi.

- Night driving between 10 pm and 6 am carries the night allowance per night; a second chauffeur is added on days over 12 hours.

How far is Dharamshala from Amritsar?
About 200 km and four and a half hours through Pathankot — much the shortest approach to the Kangra valley, and far easier than the 480 km run from Delhi.
Is the drive from the plains into the hills difficult?
No. It climbs steadily rather than in hairpins, unlike the Shimla and Manali approaches. It is one of the more relaxed mountain drives in north India.
When should we go, given both places?
October and November, or March and early April. Those are the windows where the plains are comfortable and the hills are not yet cold or wet. Outside them, one half of the trip suffers and the desk will say which.
Can we fly out of Dharamshala?
Gaggal airport near Kangra has limited flights and is weather-dependent. Chandigarh and Amritsar are the reliable options; the desk checks your outbound before fixing the last day.
Will the Dalai Lama be teaching?
Teaching schedules are published ahead and draw very large crowds, which affects accommodation and access. The desk checks the published schedule against your dates.
Can this extend into the rest of Himachal?
Yes — Dharamshala to Manali is about 250 km, which turns this into the seven-day Himachal circuit run in reverse. The charter builder prices the extra days on the same card.
