Six days is the shortest version of Rajasthan that does not feel like a sampler. It takes the three cities everyone comes for — Jaipur's forts, Jodhpur's blue old town under Mehrangarh, and Udaipur's lakes — and links them with two long, genuinely beautiful highway days. What it leaves out is the desert, and that is the honest trade: Jaisalmer is another 285 kilometres past Jodhpur and cannot be reached and returned from inside a week.

The route

Why these three cities, in this order

Rajasthan is bigger than most visitors expect — roughly the size of Germany — and the temptation to fit six cities into a week produces a holiday spent almost entirely in the car. The six-day circuit resists that. Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur sit at the corners of a workable triangle: about 335 km from Jaipur to Jodhpur, about 250 km from Jodhpur to Udaipur, and about 395 km back from Udaipur to Jaipur if you close the loop, all on highways that have improved beyond recognition in the last decade.

The order matters more than people think. Running Jaipur first gives you the busiest, most monumental city while you are freshest, and finishes in Udaipur, which is the one city on the circuit where doing nothing is the point. Reversing it — Udaipur first, Jaipur last — works if your inbound flight lands at Udaipur, and the desk will do it that way, but it ends the trip in the most crowded place rather than the calmest.

The two long legs are not dead time. Jaipur to Jodhpur runs past Ajmer and, if you want the detour, Pushkar; Jodhpur to Udaipur passes within reach of Ranakpur's Jain temple, which is one of the finest buildings in India and adds about ninety minutes. Both are on the way rather than off it, and the chauffeur will stop for either.

What each one is actually for

The three read as one state but they are startlingly different places, and a six-day circuit gives each about a day and a half.

Jaipur — the monumental one

Amber Fort on its ridge, the City Palace and Jantar Mantar inside the pink walls, Hawa Mahal from the street, and bazaars that still trade in gems and block-print rather than souvenirs. Busy, hot and worth every hour. The Jaipur chauffeur page covers the city.

Jodhpur — the dramatic one

Mehrangarh Fort rises straight out of the rock above a genuinely blue old town, and it is the single most impressive fort in Rajasthan. Below it, Jaswant Thada, the clock-tower market, and the Umaid Bhawan palace on the hill opposite.

Udaipur — the one you slow down in

Lakes, the City Palace along the water, Jagdish Temple, and the rooftops that made the city famous. It is the smallest of the three and the only one where an afternoon doing nothing is the correct itinerary.

The driving

Two long legs, and what they are like

About 980 kilometres in total on a six-day circuit, concentrated into two driving days so the other four are city days.

Jaipur to Jodhpur — about 335 km, 5.5 to 6 hours National highway through Ajmer and Beawar. Pushkar sits about 15 km off the route near Ajmer and makes a natural lunch stop; the chauffeur will take it if you want the detour.
Jodhpur to Udaipur — about 250 km, 4.5 to 5 hours South through the Aravalli foothills. Ranakpur's Jain temple is roughly 90 minutes off the direct line and is the best detour in Rajasthan; the desk builds it in if you ask when booking rather than on the morning.
Udaipur back to Jaipur — about 395 km, 6.5 to 7 hours Only if you are closing the loop for a Jaipur departure. Many six-day circuits instead fly out of Udaipur, which saves a full driving day — the desk prices both and tells you which is cheaper overall.

The state tax

The one line on a Rajasthan invoice that surprises people

A tourist-permit vehicle entering Rajasthan from another state pays the state's road tax at the border. It is a real, published government charge rather than an operator fee, and we bill it at cost against the receipt rather than folding it into the day rate. If your circuit starts and ends inside Rajasthan — a Jaipur or Udaipur arrival with a Jaipur- or Udaipur-registered car — it does not arise at all.

It matters most on Golden Triangle extensions, where a Delhi-registered car crosses into Rajasthan and back. The desk will tell you before booking which side of that line your itinerary falls on, and quote accordingly. When to go

Season, heat and the festivals worth timing for

October to March is the season, and within it December and January are the coolest and the busiest. Udaipur and Jodhpur are pleasant through February and March; Jaipur warms up first. April to June is genuinely hot — over forty degrees by midday is normal — and the circuit only works if the sightseeing is pushed into the early morning and the late afternoon, which is exactly how the desk reschedules it. July to September brings the monsoon, which fills the Udaipur lakes and makes the Aravallis green; it is the cheapest time to find a good hotel and the least crowded time at the forts.

Two dates are worth building a trip around. The Pushkar camel fair falls in November and is about 145 km from Jaipur, close enough to fold into the first leg. The Jaipur Literature Festival runs in late January and fills the city's hotels, which is a reason to book early rather than avoid it. Distances are the roads the chauffeur drives and the times are what those legs take in daylight; Rajasthan's highways are good, but 335 kilometres is still most of a morning and an afternoon.

What the transport package includes

Airport transfers include 60 minutes of waiting after landing and meet-and-greet at the arrivals exit.
The charter day (10 hours, 300 km) includes fuel and the chauffeur's meals and accommodation on outstation nights.
Night driving between 10 pm and 6 am carries the night allowance per night; a second chauffeur is added on days over 12 hours.

The 6-day Rajasthan circuit: frequently asked

Is six days enough for Rajasthan?

It is enough for Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur properly, with a day and a half in each. It is not enough for Jaisalmer and the desert, which needs eight days minimum because it sits 285 km beyond Jodhpur.

Should we fly out of Udaipur or drive back to Jaipur?

Flying out of Udaipur saves a full 395 km driving day and is usually cheaper overall once the sixth charter day is counted. The desk prices both against your flights and says which wins.

Is the Ranakpur detour worth it?

Yes, for most people it is the single best stop on the circuit — a fifteenth-century Jain temple of 1,444 carved marble pillars, about ninety minutes off the direct Jodhpur-Udaipur line. Tell the desk at booking so the day is built around it.

What is the Rajasthan state road tax?

A published state charge that a tourist-permit vehicle pays when entering Rajasthan from another state. We bill it at cost against the receipt. A circuit that starts and ends inside Rajasthan does not incur it.

Can we add Pushkar or Ranthambore?

Pushkar sits near the Jaipur-Jodhpur leg and costs about ninety minutes. Ranthambore is about 180 km from Jaipur and needs its own night to be worth it, which makes the circuit seven or eight days.

Is this circuit comfortable in the summer?

April to June is hot enough that the schedule has to change rather than the trip being impossible: sightseeing early and late, the middle of the day in the car or the hotel. The desk rebuilds the run sheet that way without being asked.
