The case for ten

What the two extra days actually fix

The eight-day circuit has one genuine flaw, and everyone who drives it notices: the 495-kilometre run from Jaisalmer to Udaipur. It is eight to nine hours, it eats a whole day, and it arrives in the most beautiful city on the circuit too tired to enjoy it. The ten-day version breaks that leg at Jodhpur or Mount Abu, and the difference to the trip is out of all proportion to the extra charter day.

The second fix is Ranakpur. On an eight-day circuit it is a detour squeezed into a driving day; on a ten-day one it is a morning, with time to sit in the temple rather than walk through it. The third is Bikaner, which almost no short circuit reaches: Junagarh Fort, the camel breeding farm, and the Karni Mata temple at Deshnoke if you have the stomach for it.

The fourth is Chittorgarh, which is genuinely a different kind of place from anything else on the circuit — the largest fort in India by area, ruined rather than restored, and almost empty of visitors. It sits about 115 kilometres from Udaipur and works as a day out or as the last stop before a Udaipur departure.

Ten days, eight places, one car

The loop runs clockwise from Jaipur, and every leg below is under six hours.

Jaipur to Bikaner — about 335 km, 5.5 to 6 hours North-west through Sikar and Fatehpur, with the painted havelis of the Shekhawati region on the way if you want them.
Bikaner to Jaisalmer — about 330 km, 5.5 hours South-west across the desert on an empty, good road.
Jaisalmer to Jodhpur — about 285 km, 5 to 5.5 hours The eight-day circuit's punishing day, here split so it is a comfortable half of one.

The northern leg

Bikaner and Shekhawati, the parts most circuits skip

Bikaner is the least-visited of Rajasthan's big four fort cities and, for that reason, the most rewarding to arrive in. Junagarh Fort was never taken, which means its interiors survive in a way Amber's and Mehrangarh's do not, and the town below it has a working bazaar rather than a tourist one. The National Research Centre on Camels sits outside the town and is more interesting than it sounds.

The Shekhawati region on the Jaipur-to-Bikaner road is the other discovery. Its towns — Mandawa, Nawalgarh, Fatehpur — are full of merchant havelis painted inside and out, most of them crumbling and some restored into hotels. A ten-day circuit can absorb a half-day there or a night at Mandawa; the desk will build either in when you book.

Karni Mata at Deshnoke, about 30 kilometres south of Bikaner, is the temple where rats are venerated and fed. It divides visitors absolutely. The chauffeur will take you and wait; nobody will be offended if you decide from the car park that you have seen enough.

The pace

What ten days feels like compared with eight

Nothing on this circuit is a nine-hour driving day, and that single fact changes the character of the trip. Departures are after breakfast rather than at seven, arrivals are in daylight, and there is an afternoon in most places rather than a dash to the fort before it closes. For travellers over sixty, for families, and for anyone who has done a compressed tour before and disliked it, this is the version that gets recommended.

It is also the version that suits photographers and repeat visitors, because it has slack in it. A morning that turns out to be worth three hours can have three hours. The coordinator holds the run sheet loosely and moves the afternoon rather than the week. Is Bikaner worth a stop?

Junagarh Fort was never captured, so its interiors survive in a way the more famous forts' do not, and the town below is a working one rather than a tourist strip. It is the least-visited of the big four and often the most enjoyed.

Should we stop in Shekhawati?

If painted merchant havelis interest you, yes — Mandawa and Nawalgarh sit directly on the Jaipur-to-Bikaner leg, so a half-day costs almost no extra driving. Some travellers spend a night at Mandawa instead.

Is Chittorgarh worth the last day?

It is the largest fort in India by area, ruined rather than restored, and usually almost empty. If you have enjoyed Amber, Mehrangarh and Jaisalmer, it is a genuinely different experience; if you are fort-weary by day ten, the desk will swap it for a lazy Udaipur morning.

Can we extend beyond ten days?
