Five-day Odisha tour package: the temples, the sun temple and Chilika lagoon
The fifth day goes to water. Chilika is the largest brackish lagoon in Asia, roughly 1,100 square kilometres of it, with Irrawaddy dolphins resident at the Satapada mouth and more than a hundred and fifty species of migratory birds on Nalabana island through the winter. It sits about 50 kilometres from Puri and turns a temple circuit into something with a good deal more variety.

The lagoon
What Chilika actually is
Chilika is a shallow brackish lagoon separated from the Bay of Bengal by a long sand bar, and it changes character with the seasons: more saline in the dry months as seawater pushes in, fresher during the monsoon as the rivers fill it. That mix is why it supports both marine and freshwater species, and why it is one of the more biologically interesting places on the east coast.
Two things bring visitors. The first is the resident population of Irrawaddy dolphins around the Satapada mouth, one of only a handful of lagoon populations in the world; boats go out from Satapada and sightings are common though not guaranteed. The second is the winter bird migration, when Nalabana island inside the lagoon fills with flamingos, geese, pelicans and waders arriving from as far as Siberia and the Caspian.
The birds are a November-to-February phenomenon and peak in December and January. The dolphins are year-round. If birds are your reason for going, the season matters enormously and the desk will say so rather than sell you a lagoon trip in September.
How to see it
The two approaches, and which suits what
Chilika is large enough that where you enter it decides what you see.
Satapada, from Puri
About 50 km south of Puri at the sea mouth. This is the dolphin end, with boats going out to the mouth and the sand bar. A half day from Puri, and the usual choice on a five-day circuit.
Barkul or Rambha, from the highway
On the western shore about 100 km from Bhubaneswar. Boats from here reach Nalabana island and Kalijai temple — better for birds, and better if you are driving on south rather than returning to Puri.
The timing
Boats go early. Dawn and the hour after it are when the water is calm, the light is good and the dolphins surface most; by mid-morning the wind gets up and the lagoon becomes choppy and less rewarding.
The driving
Four short legs and one day out
About 350 kilometres across five days, and still nothing that counts as a long drive.
- Bhubaneswar to Konark — about 65 km, 1.5 hours East through Pipli, with the applique workshops on the way.
- Konark to Puri — about 35 km, 1 hour South down the marine drive along the coast.
- Puri to Satapada and back — about 50 km each way, 1.5 hours each way South-west along the lagoon shore for the dolphin boats.
- Puri to Bhubaneswar — about 60 km, 1.5 hours North for the flight, with Pipli or Dhauli on the way if time allows.
The coast
What else the extra day opens up
Chilika is the usual fifth day, but it is not the only option, and the desk will swap it. Satapada and the lagoon suit travellers who want wildlife and water. For anyone more interested in architecture, the alternative is a day among the smaller Kalinga temples — Chaurasi, Konark's lesser neighbours, and the Buddhist complex at Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri about 90 kilometres north-east of Bhubaneswar, which is a significant excavation and almost entirely unvisited.
The third option is simply more beach. Puri's sand runs for kilometres and the town has a genuine seaside character that most Indian pilgrimage towns lack; Konark's beach nearby is quieter. For families this is often the better use of the day than a boat that leaves at dawn.
All three cost the same charter day, and the coordinator will build whichever you want into the run sheet. The charter builder prices further extensions — south to Gopalpur, or north towards Kolkata — on the same published card.

What the transport package includes

- Night driving between 10 pm and 6 am carries the night allowance per night; a second chauffeur is added on days over 12 hours.

The 5-day Odisha circuit: frequently asked
Will we see dolphins at Chilika?
Irrawaddy dolphins are resident around the Satapada mouth and sightings are common, though never guaranteed. Dawn boats do far better than mid-morning ones, which is why day four starts early.
When are the migratory birds there?
November to February, peaking in December and January, when Nalabana island fills with flamingos, geese, pelicans and waders. Outside that window the lagoon is still beautiful but the birds are gone.
Satapada or Barkul?
Satapada, about 50 km from Puri, is the dolphin end and suits a day out from Puri. Barkul and Rambha on the western shore are better for Nalabana and the birds, and suit a route continuing south.
Can we swap Chilika for something else?
Yes. The Buddhist excavations at Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri about 90 km north-east are significant and almost unvisited, or simply another beach day. Same charter day either way.
How early does the boat leave?
Dawn. The water is calm, the light is good and the dolphins surface most in the first hour; by mid-morning the wind gets up and it becomes choppy.
Is five days enough for Odisha?
For the golden triangle and the lagoon, comfortably. The state has a great deal more — the tribal districts, the Similipal reserve, the southern coast — which the charter builder will price as extra days.
