Dum Dum: one terminal, and where the chauffeur waits
Kolkata's airport handles every domestic and international flight through one integrated terminal at Dum Dum, which keeps the meeting point simple. The chauffeur waits at the arrivals exit beyond customs with a name board, in the zone the airport allows for private chauffeurs, and the confirmation names that point and gives the chauffeur's number. The sixty minutes of waiting inside every airport fare are counted from the moment the aircraft lands. The Bureau of Immigration desks clear the international arrivals from Bangkok, Singapore, Dhaka and the Gulf in a few minutes on a quiet morning and in an hour when several flights bank together; baggage follows; then customs. The chauffeur waits through all of it, a passenger delayed inside the terminal is never treated as a no-show, and waiting beyond the hour, once the passenger has cleared the hall and asked the car to stand, is charged in fifteen-minute steps at the class's extra-hour rate. The vehicles
Which car to book from Kolkata airport
The executive sedan, a Mercedes-Benz E-Class or BMW 5 Series, is the standard airport car for one or two passengers with two large bags, at $220 on the international card. The luxury sedan, the S-Class or 7 Series, is $350 for a principal or a first-class arrival, and the Kolkata S-Class page covers it. The luxury SUV, a Fortuner, Land Cruiser or GLS, carries up to five with four bags at $280 and is the right car for a family or a journey on to the districts. The premium MPV, an Innova Hycross or Kia Carnival, carries six with five bags at $250 and is the family choice for the Puja. The V-Class and the group vans cover parties of six and twelve, and coaches through the network cover delegations. GST is added; tolls and parking are at cost; there is no meet-and-greet charge and no gratuity is expected. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is about 17 kilometres from the Park Street hotels and rather less from Sector V, and the transfer is usually quick on the Bypass. What makes it worth booking rather than hailing is the arrivals hall itself: the meet is at the exit with a name board, the flight is tracked so a delay costs nothing, and an hour of waiting is inside the fixed fare. During the Puja fortnight the city end of the journey is the part that needs planning, not the airport end.
The calendar
The Puja, the winter festivals and the monsoon
Durga Puja in September or October is the airport's busiest fortnight, with families flying home and every car in the city committed weeks ahead; the desk holds cars against the flight banks and plans each journey on the day's traffic orders, because the route from the airport to the south changes with the pandal closures. The Book Fair in January and February, the Film Festival in November and December and the wedding season bring their own arrivals.
