South Goa is a different state of mind: longer, emptier beaches at Colva, Benaulim and Cavelossim, the Portuguese mansions of Chandor and Loutolim inland, and Palolem at the far end. Most people who have only done the north are surprised by it, and a car is the only practical way to reach it.

The south

What crossing the river actually gets you

The Zuari bridge is the dividing line, and the change on the far side is immediate. The southern beaches — Colva, Benaulim, Varca, Cavelossim — run for kilometres with room between the shacks, the big resort properties sit back behind the treeline, and the general noise level drops. Palolem, at the far southern end about 70 kilometres from Calangute, is a single crescent bay that is busier than the rest but still nothing like Baga.

Inland is the part most visitors never see at all. Chandor and Loutolim hold the great Portuguese mansions — Braganza House at Chandor is still lived in by descendants of the original family and can be visited — and the villages around them are quiet, Catholic and utterly unlike the beach belt. It is the best half day in Goa for anyone tiring of sand.

None of this is reachable without a car in any sensible way. The south is where the argument for a chauffeur on a Goa holiday stops being about convenience and becomes about access.

The balance

How to split four days between the two coasts

There are two workable structures and the desk will build either.

Stay north, day-trip south

Three nights in the northern belt with one long day across to the south. Simplest, no repacking, and the day is about 140 km round trip. Best if the group is happier with a single base.

Split the stay

Two nights north, two nights south. More driving on the middle day but far better if the point of the trip is the quiet end — you get a southern morning and a southern evening rather than a visit.

Base in the middle

Panaji or the Dona Paula side, roughly equidistant. Good for a trip weighted towards Old Goa, the river and the Latin quarter rather than the beach, and the shortest average drives.

The driving

Short legs, slow roads

Nothing in Goa is far; everything takes longer than it should in season.

North belt to Old Goa and Panaji — about 20 to 25 km, 40 to 50 minutes Inland on the Mapusa road and along the Mandovi.
North to South Goa — about 60 to 70 km, 1.5 to 2 hours Across the Mandovi and the Zuari by bridge, through Margao. Longer in the December peak than the distance suggests.
Colva to Palolem — about 40 km, 1 hour South through Cuncolim and Chaudi on the highway, then west to the bay.
South Goa to Dabolim — about 25 to 35 km, 40 minutes Which is why a southern last night suits a Dabolim departure and a northern one suits Mopa.

Eating

The thing a chauffeur unlocks that nothing else does

Goa's food is the strongest reason to have a car, and it is under-discussed. The best Goan cooking is not on the beach: it is in village houses and small places inland — Saligao, Assagao, Siolim and Anjuna in the north, Majorda, Chandor and Benaulim in the south — and the good ones are spread out. With a car and a chauffeur who knows the roads after dark, an evening can include two villages and a beach; without one it includes whichever shack is nearest.

The distinction worth learning is between the Hindu Goan kitchen and the Catholic one: the first leans on coconut, kokum and tamarind, the second on vinegar, pork and Portuguese technique. Both are worth a meal. Fish thali at lunch is the cheapest good meal in India and every village has a place that does it well.

What the transport package includes

A private, air-conditioned vehicle of the class you book, held for the whole circuit — the same car from the first pickup to the last drop, never shared and never re-assigned.

Airport transfers include 60 minutes of waiting after landing and meet-and-greet at the arrivals exit.

Night driving between 10 pm and 6 am carries the night allowance per night; a second chauffeur is added on days over 12 hours.

The 4-day Goa package: frequently asked

Is South Goa worth the drive?

For most people, yes. The beaches are longer and emptier, the resorts sit back from the sand, and the Portuguese mansions at Chandor and Loutolim are the best half day in the state for anyone tiring of beaches.

Should we stay north or south?

North for nightlife, markets and variety; south for quiet, space and better swimming. On four days a northern base with one southern day is simplest; a two-and-two split is better if the quiet end is the point.

How long is the drive from North to South Goa?

About 60 to 70 km and an hour and a half to two hours, across the Mandovi and the Zuari through Margao. Slower in the December peak than the distance suggests.

Is Palolem too far for a day trip?

It is about 70 km from Calangute, so a day trip works but is a long one. If Palolem is the main draw, base south for two nights instead.

What is the best day for the markets?

Anjuna's flea market is Wednesday, Mapusa's produce market is Friday, and there are Saturday night markets at Arpora in season. The desk builds the itinerary around whichever falls in your dates.

Can the chauffeur wait while we have dinner?

Yes, and that is much of the point. Waiting time is inside the day's hours, and having somebody else drive the coast road at night is the single best reason to book the car.
