Goa is small enough to be a circuit in itself and well placed for two others. The state runs about a hundred kilometres along the coast with two airports at opposite ends; inland, the Western Ghats rise within an hour. Karnataka’s palace country is a day south-east and Maharashtra’s cave temples a day north — both better flown, with the car meeting the arrival.

The state

Why Goa needs a car more than most beach destinations

The assumption that Goa is a place you stay still in is what makes most visits worse than they should be. It is a state, not a resort: Calangute to Palolem is about 70 kilometres of narrow coastal road, Dabolim airport is about 40 from the northern beaches, and Mopa in the far north is nearly an hour from Panaji. Distances that look trivial on a map take real time on the ground.

More to the point, almost everything worth seeing is spread out. Old Goa’s churches are 10 kilometres inland from Panaji, the Ponda spice belt 30, Dudhsagar Falls about 60 to the sanctuary gate, and the southern beaches an hour and a half from the northern ones. The good restaurants are in villages — Assagao, Siolim, Chandor — none of them walkable from a beach hotel.

That is the argument for the car and the chauffeur, and it is a stronger one here than in most places: beaches in the morning when they are quiet, the interior in the middle of the day, and villages in the evening with somebody else driving the coast road after dinner. One practical note that goes wrong often: check which airport your flight uses. The same airlines serve Dabolim and Mopa on different routes, they are at opposite ends of the state, and a transfer booked against the wrong one starts the holiday with a wasted hour. Three versions of Goa, and two neighbouring circuits.

A long weekend

Three days: the north beach belt, Old Goa and Panaji’s Latin quarter. Enough for a first visit that is mostly about the beach.

Both coasts

Four days adds the south — Colva, Benaulim and Palolem, plus the Portuguese mansions at Chandor and Loutolim, which most visitors never see.

The whole state

Five days adds Dudhsagar Falls, the Ponda spice plantations and the river islands of Divar and Chorao, which are two of the quietest hours in India.

Next door

The Karnataka circuit from Bangalore and the Deccan caves from Mumbai are both short flights, with the car meeting the arrival.

The season

Three quite different Goas through the year

November to February is the season: dry, warm and busy, with Christmas and New Year at the peak when rates roughly double and the northern belt is genuinely crowded. If those dates are not fixed for you, early November and the whole of February give the same weather with a fraction of the people.

March and April are hot and humid but still dry, and the beaches empty considerably; May is uncomfortable. June to September is the monsoon, when much of the beach infrastructure closes and swimming is restricted or banned — but the state turns green, Dudhsagar runs at full force, and hotel rates collapse. It is a landscape holiday rather than a beach one, and it is genuinely worth doing once.

Two dates to know: the Goa Carnival in February closes roads in Panaji for the parade, and the feast of St Francis Xavier on 3 December brings very large crowds to Old Goa. Both are worth seeing; both need the route planned around them, which the events page covers.

Before you go

The Goa most visitors miss entirely

Old Goa was, in the sixteenth century, a city larger than Lisbon. What remains is a cluster of churches in open ground about 10 kilometres from Panaji — the Basilica of Bom Jesus with St Francis Xavier’s remains, the vast Se Cathedral, and the ruins of several more. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it takes a morning.

Fontainhas, the Latin quarter of Panaji, is the other half of that story: narrow streets of ochre and blue houses with tiled street names and iron balconies, best walked in the late afternoon. The Mandovi river cruises leave from the waterfront a few minutes away.

Inland, the Portuguese mansions at Chandor and Loutolim are the real discovery. Braganza House at Chandor is still lived in by descendants of the original family and can be visited; the scale of it, and the fact that it is a home rather than a museum, is genuinely surprising.

And the islands. Divar and Chorao sit in the Mandovi within sight of Panaji, reached by free vehicle ferries that run all day and take the car straight on. Divar has empty lanes, Portuguese houses and a hill church with arguably the best view in Goa. Two hours, and almost nobody goes.

How it works

What the transport package covers

One car and one chauffeur for the whole stay, with the chauffeur’s meals inside the rate. Fuel, permits and insurance included; the Mopa expressway and Zuari bridge tolls and any parking at cost against receipts. Goa’s daily distances are short, so the charter day’s ten hours is the binding limit rather than its 300 kilometres.

The price is the published charter-day rate multiplied by the days, checkable against the rates page. At Dudhsagar the forest jeep from the sanctuary gate is a separate charge paid at the counter and billed at cost — private vehicles are not permitted on the final track, and the daily jeep numbers are capped, so arriving early matters more than booking does.

Hotels are quoted separately on request. In Goa the difference between a beach-belt hotel and a village property matters more than the star rating, and the desk names properties rather than categories.

Goa also has the tightest traffic-enforcement culture of any state we operate in, and the rules around drink-driving are enforced hard, particularly on the coastal road at night and during the season. That is the least glamorous but most practical argument for the chauffeur here: the evening in a village restaurant works properly when nobody at the table is counting drinks or driving the Anjuna road afterwards.

The vehicles on this circuit are the same fleet as everywhere else — commercial permit, fitness certificate, insurance, registration on the written confirmation. That is worth stating in Goa specifically, where a great deal of what is rented to visitors is neither commercially permitted nor insured to carry paying passengers, and where the difference only becomes visible after something goes wrong.

Which Goa airport will our flight use?

Either Dabolim in the south or Mopa in the far north — the same airlines serve both on different routes, so the ticket decides. They are at opposite ends of the state, so the desk checks the code against your flight number.

Do we need a car if we are staying on the beach?

For the beach itself, no. For Old Goa, Panaji, the southern coast, the interior and the village restaurants, yes — they are 10 to 70 km apart on narrow roads, and waiting for cabs eats a short trip.

Can our car drive to Dudhsagar Falls?

As far as the sanctuary gate at Mollem, about 60 km from Panaji. The final forest track is restricted to official jeeps booked at the counter, with a capped daily number, so arriving early matters.

Is Goa worth visiting in the monsoon?

As a landscape holiday, yes — green, dramatic, very cheap, with Dudhsagar at full force. Much of the beach infrastructure closes and swimming is restricted, so go for the state rather than the sand.
