Dhanaulti and Kanatal sit about 60 kilometres beyond Mussoorie on a ridge at around 2,300 metres, with deodar forest, almost no traffic and a clearer Himalayan view than Mussoorie usually manages. It is the difference between a hill-station trip and a mountain one, and it costs a single charter day.

What Dhanaulti gives that Mussoorie cannot

Mussoorie is a fine hill station and it is also, in season, extremely busy. The Mall on a May weekend is shoulder to shoulder, and the Himalayan view that is its main selling point is frequently lost to haze rising off the plains. Dhanaulti, an hour further along the ridge and 300 metres higher, has almost none of that: deodar forest, a handful of properties, eco-parks rather than amusement arcades, and air that is reliably clearer.

Kanatal, a little further again, is quieter still and is where most of the good small hotels on this ridge actually are. Between the two there is enough for a full day — forest walks, the Surkanda Devi temple reached by a steep climb or a short ropeway, and viewpoints that on a clear morning show the Bandarpunch and Swargarohini peaks properly.

The practical gain is the same as on every six-day version we publish: the last day stops being a seven-hour drive. The circuit descends to Dehradun for the final night, which makes either a flight or a shorter road run home genuinely comfortable.

Robber's Cave and Sahastradhara

A river running through a limestone gorge you walk up through the water, and sulphur springs on the city's edge. Both are about 10 to 15 km out and both are busy at weekends.

The Forest Research Institute

A vast colonial building in a park, with museums of forestry that are far more interesting than they sound and one of the best photographic subjects in the state.

Mindrolling Monastery

A large Tibetan monastery on the southern edge of the city with a 60-metre stupa and quiet gardens — unexpected, uncrowded and free.

The view

When the Himalaya are actually visible

Every hill station in this state advertises a Himalayan view, and for much of the year it is not there. Haze from the plains builds through the spring, the monsoon brings cloud, and it is only really from late September through to about December, and again on clear mornings in February and March, that the high peaks show properly from Mussoorie or Dhanaulti.

Even in the good months it is a morning phenomenon. The peaks are usually clear at first light and gone by ten as the valley warms and haze rises. That is why day five on this circuit starts early at a viewpoint rather than after breakfast — it is the difference between seeing Bandarpunch and seeing a white smudge.

If the view is the reason for your trip, tell the desk when you book and it will weight the itinerary to the ridge and schedule the early starts. Nobody can promise weather, but the odds in October are materially better than the odds in May, and we would rather say so than sell you a June trip on a photograph taken in November.

What the transport package includes

What does the sixth day add?

The Dhanaulti and Kanatal ridge at about 2,300 metres — deodar forest, far fewer people than Mussoorie and a clearer Himalayan view — and it splits the long descent across two days instead of one.

When are the Himalayan peaks actually visible?

Late September to December, and on clear February and March mornings. It is a first-light phenomenon: the peaks are usually gone by ten as haze rises off the valley.

Is Dhanaulti better than Mussoorie?

Quieter, higher and clearer, with almost no commercial development. Mussoorie has the Mall, the shops and the restaurants. Most people want one night of each, which is exactly what this circuit gives.

Is Dehradun worth a half day?

Yes — the Forest Research Institute, Mindrolling Monastery and Robber's Cave are all worth an hour and none of them is crowded on a weekday.

Can we do this in winter?

Yes. Dhanaulti gets snow in January and February and the view is at its best, but the ridge road can be slow and the desk will specify a capable vehicle rather than a sedan.

How does this compare with the Himachal circuit?

Shorter drives, lower altitude and much less demanding. Himachal asks for two seven-to-eight hour mountain days; nothing here exceeds about five and a half hours.
