How Delhi shapes a chauffeur booking

Delhi is really three cities for a chauffeur. There is New Delhi proper, the Lutyens grid of Connaught Place, the ministries, Kartavya Path and the Chanakyapuri diplomatic enclave, where distances are short and the traffic is governed by security and ceremony as much as by volume. There is the airport belt in the south-west, Indira Gandhi International with Aerocity beside it, sixteen kilometres from Connaught Place along the NH48 corridor that also runs on to Gurugram. And there are the satellite cities, Gurugram to the south-west with Cyber City and Golf Course Road, Noida to the east with Sector 62 and the Yamuna Expressway beyond it, where most of the region's corporate square footage now sits.

A chauffeur who works Delhi knows which of the three a journey is in and plans accordingly. The Dhaula Kuan interchange, the Ring Road at 6 pm, the Ashram flyover and the DND Flyway into Noida each have hours to avoid, and the desk's dispatch times are built on them rather than on the map distance. The Airport Express metro reaches New Delhi station from T3 in about twenty minutes, and the desk will say so to a solo traveller with hand luggage; for anyone with bags, a meeting to make or a hotel in Gurugram, the chauffeured car is the faster door-to-door and the fare is fixed.

Delhi also has a calendar. The Republic Day parade on 26 January closes central New Delhi for the morning and rehearsals close it earlier in the month; the India Art Fair and the Bharat Mobility Global Expo fill the hotels in late January and February; the Delhi Half Marathon closes roads in October; and December and January bring fog that delays flights at IGI, which is why every airport booking is tracked from departure and the pickup moves with the aircraft.

Beyond the city

Agra, Jaipur and the day trips from Delhi

Delhi is the starting point of the Golden Triangle, and the chauffeured day trip to Agra is the single most requested outstation journey on the desk. The Yamuna Expressway makes it about 230 km and three and a half hours each way, the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, and the chauffeur knows the parking zones from which electric shuttles run to the gates; a charter day of ten hours and 300 km covers it in an executive sedan for $1,700 on the international card, with the extra kilometres at the published rate. Jaipur is about 280 km down NH48, a long day trip or, better, an overnight with the chauffeur's lodging inside the charter rate and the Rajasthan road tax for a tourist-permit car charged at cost against the receipt.

Closer in, Neemrana Fort is about 120 km on the Jaipur road and makes a lunch and back; Mathura and Vrindavan are about 150 km down the Yamuna Expressway; and the hill road to Mussoorie and Rishikesh starts at Dehradun, five to six hours away.
