The Shimla road is the classic run: through Zirakpur and Panchkula to Kalka, the Parwanoo barrier where Himachal begins, and then the climb through Dharampur and Solan to Shimla, 119 km from Chandigarh and about three and a half hours. Kasauli, at 1,951 metres above the same road, is about 60 km and a lunch trip with a ridge walk; the district lists Chandigarh as its nearest airport and Dharampur and Solan as its stations. Some passengers ride the Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge line, about six hours with 103 tunnels by the Shimla district figure, and have the chauffeur meet them at the top with the luggage. Delhi is 370 km beyond Shimla by the same page, which is why Chandigarh, not Delhi, is the sensible road-head.

Himachal charges an entry toll to vehicles registered outside the state at its barriers, and Parwanoo is the one on the Shimla road. Under the state's Toll Policy 2026-27 the Parwanoo main barrier and the Tipra bypass are among the first barriers fitted with FASTag collection, and a commuter who returns through the same barrier within 24 hours can ask the operator for a receipt. The chauffeur pays the toll, keeps the receipt and itemises it; the passenger does nothing at the barrier. Hill driving is done at a steady pace, with no overtaking on the bends, and the descent from Shimla is timed for daylight; in winter the chauffeur checks the district advisories for snow above Kufri.

Anandpur Sahib, about 85 km north on the Rupnagar road, is the Sikh heritage day: Virasat-e-Khalsa is open from 10.30 am to 4.30 pm and closed on Mondays, with maintenance closures in late January and late July, and Hola Mohalla in March fills the town. Morni Hills, about 45 km from Chandigarh by the Panchkula district figure, is the short climb. Multi-day charters run Chandigarh to Shimla and on to the Kinnaur or Kullu valleys with night halts, the chauffeur's lodging and meals included; Punjab runs to Ludhiana and Amritsar are booked as one-way transfers or overnights, and tolls on the national highways are paid by FASTag.
