Ujjain is the shortest run, 53 km and about an hour and a quarter by the district administration's figure, with the Madhya Pradesh Tourism itinerary allowing an hour and a half. Most passengers go for Mahakaleshwar, and the early-morning bhasma aarti means a departure from Indore in the small hours or a night in Ujjain; the aarti requires advance registration through the temple's official portal, which the passenger arranges. Omkareshwar, the island jyotirlinga on the Narmada, is 84 km from Indore airport by the Khandwa district administration's figure, and Maheshwar, with its ghats, fort and saree weavers, is 96 km by the Khargone district figure; the two are 66 km apart, and Madhya Pradesh Tourism allows an hour and a half between them.

The routes we drive from Indore

Mandu is the heritage day. The Madhya Pradesh Tourism page puts it at 95 km from Indore airport, with Dhar 40 km away and the return to Indore at about two and a half hours; the Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal, Hoshang Shah's tomb and Roopmati's pavilion spread across the plateau, so the chauffeur drives between them rather than parking once. Maheshwar is 40 km from Mandu, which is why the classic three-day charter runs Indore to Mandu on day one, Mandu to Maheshwar and Omkareshwar on day two with a night on the river, and Omkareshwar back to Indore or on to Ujjain on day three. Bhopal, the state capital, is about 190 km east for government meetings and is a long day return.

Permits, halts and the multi-day charter

All of these runs stay inside Madhya Pradesh, so there are no state entry taxes; highway tolls are paid by FASTag and itemised, and the ghat sections at Mandu and the Narmada bridges are driven at a sensible pace. Night halts include the chauffeur's lodging and meals; hotels for passengers at Mandu, Maheshwar, Omkareshwar and Ujjain are booked by the passenger or by the office. Temple towns have their own rhythm: Omkareshwar and Ujjain fill on Mondays and in Shravan, Mahashivratri brings the largest crowds of the year, and the chauffeur knows where the barricades go up and where the car can wait.
