Jaisalmer is about 285 km west by NH125 through Dechu and Pokhran, five to six hours with a lunch stop, on long straight desert stretches; it is booked as a one-way with the chauffeur staying for the return or continuing to Bikaner. Osian is about 65 km north, a comfortable day return for the temples and the dunes. Nagaur Fort is about 135 km, a long day. Udaipur is about 250 km by NH162 through Pali, around four hours direct, or two days through Ranakpur, about 160 km, and Kumbhalgarh. Jaipur is about 335 km by NH62 through Ajmer, roughly six hours; Ajmer and Pushkar sit on that road as a stop on the way.
The routes we drive from Jodhpur
NH125, NH62 and NH162 are tolled at intervals and the chauffeur's FASTag pays. All of these routes stay inside Rajasthan, so no state entry tax arises on our Rajasthan-registered cars; leaving the state for Gujarat or Delhi, the chauffeur pays any levy at the border and it is itemised. The desert roads are open and fast but carry military convoys near Pokhran and wandering cattle at dusk, so we prefer to be off NH125 by nightfall. Summer heat from April to June makes an early start essential and the cars run with cooled water and a fuel plan because stations thin out west of Pokhran. Winter mornings are cold enough for fog on the Pali and Ajmer roads.
Permits, halts and the multi-day charter
Multi-day desert charters take three or four days: Jodhpur to Jaisalmer with a night in the dunes, then Bikaner or back through Osian, or the full Rajasthan circuit onward to Udaipur and Jaipur over a week. The chauffeur stays with the car, overnights near your hotel or camp and keeps the vehicle fuelled and dust-free each morning. Nagaur's cattle fair in January or February and Pushkar's fair in the autumn are fixed-date charters booked months ahead. Fuel, tolls, permits and the chauffeur's expenses sit inside the quoted charter; a detour added on the road is priced before it is driven, and an SUV is suggested for the dune camps and their tracks.
