Outstation in Kochi
Munnar is about 119 km from the airport and 120 km from Ernakulam Junction by Kerala Tourism's figures, about four hours through Kothamangalam, Neriamangalam and Adimali and up the ghat to about 1,600 m, almost always an overnight. Alappuzha is about 55 km south and the chauffeur drops at the Punnamada jetty at noon for a houseboat and collects the next morning; Kumarakom is about two hours from the airport. Thekkady is about 150 km through Kottayam and Kumily, four to five hours, and Athirappilly about 70 km from the airport as a half-day. Thrissur is 72 km by NH544; Thiruvananthapuram 196 km by NH66, five to six hours; Kozhikode about 180 km north by NH66; Coimbatore about 200 km by NH544 through Palakkad.
The routes we drive from Kochi
NH66 and NH544 are tolled and the chauffeur's FASTag pays. Crossing into Tamil Nadu for Coimbatore at Walayar or towards Kodaikanal past Kumily, the border check posts collect a state tax on tourist-permit cars, and Kerala levies its own per-seat tax on tourist vehicles coming the other way; our Kerala-registered cars pay the Tamil Nadu levy at the post and it is itemised. The Munnar ghat after Neriamangalam is narrow, misty and crossed by elephants at night, so we run it in daylight and leave the hills by mid-afternoon; the Thekkady road has the same rule. The monsoon from June to September slows every hill road and can close the ghats after landslips, and the chauffeur checks the day before.
Permits, halts and the multi-day charter
Multi-day charters are Kerala's classic loop: Kochi to Munnar, over the hills to Thekkady, down to Kumarakom or Alappuzha for the backwaters and back to Kochi in five or six days, or the northern loop through Thrissur and Guruvayur to Wayanad. Coimbatore is a one-way transfer for passengers flying from there; Thiruvananthapuram a long one-way down NH66. Thrissur Pooram in April or May is a fixed-date day charter with the car parked outside the town. The chauffeur stays with the car, overnights near your resort and keeps the vehicle ready; fuel, tolls, border taxes and the chauffeur's expenses are inside the quoted charter, and an SUV is suggested for the Munnar and Wayanad estate roads in the rains.

Questions
Outstation in Kochi: frequently asked
How long is Kochi to Munnar?
About 119 km from the airport and 120 km from Ernakulam by Kerala Tourism's figures, around four hours because the last stretch is a ghat road climbing to about 1,600 m. We drive it in daylight, leave Kochi by early morning and come down before dark; night runs are avoided for mist and elephants.
Can you drop me at a houseboat in Alappuzha?
Yes. Alappuzha is about 55 km south of the city and the houseboats board at the Punnamada jetty around noon; the chauffeur drops you there, keeps your extra luggage if you wish, and collects you at the same jetty the next morning to continue to Kumarakom, Kochi or Thekkady.
Do you cross into Tamil Nadu?
Yes. Coimbatore is about 200 km by NH544 through Thrissur and Palakkad, with the Walayar check post at the border, and Thekkady sits beside the Kumily post. The Tamil Nadu tax on the car is paid by the chauffeur at the post and shown at cost; you need only your own ID.
Is the monsoon a problem for hill charters?
From June to September the Munnar, Thekkady and Wayanad roads are slow and can close after landslips, and the waterfalls at Athirappilly are at their fullest. We check the road status the day before, suggest an SUV for the estate roads and adjust the plan rather than cancel it.
