Jaipur is the gateway to Rajasthan and the best place to start a circuit of it. Jodhpur is about 335 kilometres west, Udaipur 395 south, Jaisalmer 560 into the desert, and Agra 240 east — which means both the state circuit and the Golden Triangle can begin at your Jaipur hotel and finish wherever your flight home leaves from.

The gateway
Why starting in Jaipur beats starting in Delhi
Most Rajasthan circuits are sold from Delhi, and for a first visit doing the Golden Triangle that makes sense. But if Rajasthan itself is the trip, starting in Jaipur removes a 270-kilometre leg at each end and puts you inside the state on day one. Jaipur has good domestic connections and a growing international schedule, and the airport is about 12 kilometres from the palace hotels.
It also solves the state road tax question. A vehicle entering Rajasthan from another state pays the state’s road tax at the border — a real published government charge that we bill at cost. A circuit that starts and ends inside Rajasthan with a Jaipur-registered car does not incur it at all, which is a genuine saving on a longer trip.
The third advantage is direction. From Jaipur you can run west into the desert, south to the lakes, or east to Agra, and the circuit can finish at Udaipur, Jodhpur or Delhi depending on your flight home. There is no repositioning surcharge for the chauffeur finishing away from base — it is already inside the charter-day rate.

The season
When to come, and what the heat actually does
October to March is the season, and December and January are the coolest and busiest. Udaipur and Jodhpur stay pleasant through February and March; Jaipur warms first. The Pushkar camel fair falls in November about 145 kilometres away, and the Jaipur Literature Festival in late January fills the city — both are reasons to book early rather than to avoid.
April to June is genuinely hot, regularly above forty degrees by midday, and the circuit only works if sightseeing moves to the early morning and the late afternoon with the middle of the day spent in the car or the hotel. That is exactly how the desk reschedules it rather than pretending the heat is manageable.
July to September is the monsoon, which is the least-known good time to come: the Udaipur lakes fill, the Aravallis go green, the forts look better wet than dry, and hotel rates fall sharply. Rain is intermittent rather than constant here, unlike the coast. Our rates do not change by season — a charter day in June costs what it costs in December.
Before you go
Two days in Jaipur before the circuit starts
Jaipur rewards two days more than either Jodhpur or Udaipur does, and a circuit that gives it one is short-changing the best of the three. Amber Fort, about 11 kilometres north, wants the morning light and about three hours; Jaigarh above it holds the largest cannon on wheels ever made and almost nobody climbs to it.
Inside the walls, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar’s eighteenth-century astronomical instruments — a UNESCO site and far more interesting than photographs suggest — and Hawa Mahal from the street. The Albert Hall museum in the Ram Niwas garden is the quiet alternative on a hot afternoon.
The bazaars are the other half of the city and the reason for the second day. Johari Bazaar for gems and Bapu Bazaar for textiles and jutti are working markets rather than tourist ones, and the block-printing and blue-pottery workshops on the city’s edges take visitors for a half day. With a chauffeur waiting, the shopping goes into the car rather than being carried.
If your dates allow, an evening at the Rambagh or the Rajvilas is worth it even if you are not staying — both take outside diners and both are considerably more interesting buildings than any restaurant.

What the transport package covers
One car and one chauffeur for the whole circuit, with the chauffeur’s meals and accommodation on outstation nights inside the rate. Fuel, permits and insurance included; tolls, parking and the state road tax where it applies are billed at cost against receipts rather than estimated.
The price is the published charter-day rate multiplied by the days, checkable against the rates page. Rajasthan is the one state where the heritage and palace hotels are a genuine reason to take the all-inclusive quote — the difference between a good heritage property and a generic four-star is the difference between the trip you imagined and a perfectly adequate one, and a category description will not tell you which you are getting.

A word on shopping, because in Rajasthan it is part of the trip rather than an afterthought. Jaipur is gems, block print and blue pottery; Jodhpur is antiques and spices; Udaipur is miniature painting; Jaisalmer is textiles and leather. Commission arrangements between drivers and shops are a real and well-known problem in this state, and ours is simple: our chauffeurs take no commission and will take you where you ask, including to nothing at all.
If you want to be shown the good workshops rather than the tourist emporia, say so at booking and the desk will name them on the run sheet with the prices you should expect to pay. If you would rather skip shopping entirely, say that too and the day is planned without it. Neither costs anything extra, and neither is the default we assume.

Is it better to start a Rajasthan circuit in Jaipur or Delhi?
Jaipur, if Rajasthan is the trip — it removes a 270 km leg at each end and avoids the state road tax that a Delhi-registered car pays at the border. Delhi is better if you are doing the Golden Triangle as a first visit.
What is the Rajasthan state road tax?
A published state charge a tourist-permit vehicle pays entering Rajasthan from another state, billed at cost against the receipt. A circuit starting and ending inside Rajasthan does not incur it.
How long is Jaipur to Jodhpur?
About 335 km and five and a half to six hours through Ajmer and Beawar, with Pushkar about 15 km off the route if you want the detour.
Can the circuit finish somewhere other than Jaipur?
